Any little child when asked what he wants to become when he grows up, immediately replies – a doctor, an engineer, a pilot, a teacher, a policeman,a fire-fighter, Sachin Tendulkar, Shahrukh Khan… the list is endless.
Ask the same person the same question when he/she is an adolescent and he/she will shrug his shoulders and say ‘I don’t know’ or I haven’t decided yet or I am too confused. Choosing a career is a major decision and needs good career planning; it requires matching a person’s interests, aptitudes, skills and personality with the job requirements.
Career planning process involves:
- Knowing oneself and SWOT analysis
- Knowing the world of work
- Developing skills and knowledge suitable for the profession.
Knowing a student’s subjects of interest, his abilities, skills and personality is a must in career decision. Every student is unique. Students can be classified as Picture Smart, Word Smart, Sound Smart, Number Smart, etc. PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT helps students explore their interests, skills and special abilities, and thus help them in suitable stream selection and choice of a career. Students require comprehensive knowledge on various entrance exams for entry to various courses, eligibility conditions for courses, nature of exam, etc.
Attending Career Counselling sessions helps students in exploring various options, removing myths regarding career options, and provides comprehensive knowledge which helps them in decision making and grooming of one’s personality for the job world.
Knowledge is empowerment and schools play an important role in providing Career Counselling sessions to students and their parents. Group Counselling sessions motivate students to think in the right direction and with the help of Individual Counselling and Psychological Assessment students become aware of their interest, abilities and personality and are better able to plan their future.
Choosing a career of choice helps students in right focus, preparation, resource planning and job satisfaction.
