Special Olympics is an international organization that unleashes the human spirit through the transformative power and joy of sports every day around the world. Founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the Special Olympics movement has grown from a few hundred athletes to more than 4.2 million athletes in 170 countries. With the support of more than one million coaches and volunteers, Special Olympics is able to deliver 32 Olympic-type sports and more than 70,000 competitions throughout the year.

Special Olympics Bharat organizes sports training and competitions at various levels – local, district, state, national and international. Based on abilities and performance, athletes cross each level to participate at higher consecutive levels. While sports remain the mainstay of the Special Olympics Programme, the capacity of the athletes is constantly developed through regular trainings and additional initiatives that help strengthen the athletes – mentally, physically and emotionally.

Special Olympics Bharat was registered with the Indian Trust Act in 2001 and recognized by the Government of India as a National Sports Federation 2006 in the Priority Category for the development of Sports for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities. It has been designated as the Nodal Agency in 2010 by the Government for conduct of sports for all disabilities on account of its national presence, outreach and experience. Special Olympics Bharat works across all States and Union Territories in India including 679 districts. The year round sports trainings and competitions prepare our Athletes and Coaches to showcase their sport abilities and skills every two years at the Special Olympics World Games.

Programmes that can be executed in schools Unified Sports

The Walt Disney Company, ESPN and Special Olympics initiated a global programme that would leverage the power of sports to promote an environment of social inclusion and acceptance, by uniting people with and without intellectual disabilities.

Playing as team mates is instrumental in breaking barriers, focusing on achieving the same goals and striking friendships and bonds on as well as off the sports field. Unified Sports Programme is central to Special Olympics Bharat strategic planning. With India having successfully unified 1,54,464 athletes with 1,70,939 partners till December 2015, the programme is diversifying its outreach to include persons from more schools, colleges, fan clubs, medical institutions, media, universities and from the corporate world to join the athletes on the sports field.
