First school as a teacher: St Martin’s High School directly as Principal but I regularly teach English, Biology and Physics to Class X. I also teach the class some other subjects, like Chemistry, History and Geography whenever needed.

The best thing about being a teacher: Getting to spend productive time with exuberant, vivacious children—the future; I feel connected with the young. I see overwhelming number of possibilities, opportunities to make the best use of this time to mentor and nurture them as individuals apart from teaching them well.

How did you feel on the first day being a school principal: I realised the responsibility I was to shoulder, that every decision I made would have an impact on the children, either in school or at home.

I felt it was not the academics alone but their emotional growth was equally important. The values we try to imbibe through our actions, the ambience and the way everybody is treated would help shape the children’s minds.

Please describe the role you feel parents should play in the operation of the school: There needs to be coordinated effort towards the child’s growth with positive reinforcement from parents at home. Over-expectation, comparison with other children, trying to live their dream through children are some of the harmful traits parents should avoid.

First indications that the classroom is an effective learning place: The smiling faces of children with eyes full of enthusiasm, eagerness to do their assignments definitely speak of effectiveness.

Vision of special education: It needs to be dealt with sensitivity which cannot be taught. Schools need training to handle this aspect.

To make inclusion a reality: It is essential and important but should be treaded on with caution. It needs delicate handling otherwise it can do more harm than good. The children should accept them as part of them. It is possible. I feel good that we had some such cases and they were so well integrated.

View on CCE: It does not really make much difference in the long run.

View on e-learning platform: e-learning is usually an additional tool, as an extension of text books. Most of these programmes are developed with commercial interest.

There are huge gaps between the requirement and available materials. It can be effective if it is coordinated to integrate with the printed matter.

Best conference/seminar you have attended on education: Effective Educational Management Programme at XLRI, Jamshedpur.

Qualities you seek in a new teacher: The desire to learn and love children.

Advice that you want to give to new teachers: Once you choose to be a teacher, do full justice to the profession. Continue to learn new methods, techniques as they help you to grow personally as well as professionally.
