Importance of skill development curriculum in school

The early years of a child are the time to build a strong foundation and to establish behaviours or skills that will make them successful in later life. Meeting specific milestones in all five domains of development (Cognitive, Physical, Social, Emotional and Language) helps children to grow into strong and healthy adults. In order to achieve this, it is essential to have a curriculum that helps develop these skills.

All the domains are interlinked with each other. Missing out on any one of the domains will result in an incomplete or unbalanced education. Decades of collective research has suggested that children learn and develop essential life skills through play.

Some benefits of learning through play are:

  • It builds self-esteem,confidence and leadership skills.
  • It develops problem-solving skills.
  • It encourages new vocabulary usage.
  • It teaches children to collaborate.
  • It helps children to be independent.
  • It is a catharsis for emotions (Emotional catharsis is an important factor in a person’s well-being).
  • It also encourages planning and thinking for the future.

One thing to remember is that while some of these skills seem to develop naturally through play, they still are all skill areas that should be included in the curriculum.

Skill-based curriculum

A skill based curriculum empowers children as readers, writers, critical thinkers and mathematicians to become creative, well-informed, passionate and joyful learners and citizens of the world. Children think for themselves and are ready to begin their journey of learning and discovery.

The unique flexibility of a skill-based curriculum allows us to continuously challenge each child at his or her own pace. Our curriculum at Kangaroo Kids International Preschool at Almeida, Bandra, includes scheduled enrichment activities incorporating Spanish, Art, Dance each taught by qualified professionals.

Dear Teachers, the finest hours of life are not those spent among groups of people, but in good conversation with a few, in reading great books, in listening to great music, wandering in a forest of giant sequoias, peering into a microscope, unravelling nature’s secrets in the laboratory. The teachers who have the most to give their students are those who have enriched their minds and hearts in solitude.
